Forekeel Repair on “Felicity”As part of Gannon and Benjamin’s transportation services, we offer vessel delivery to and from — moving boats in the water on their own bottoms. This fall, Lyle and Critch traveled to Maine to sail “Felicity” back to Vineyard Haven Harbor, where we have been carrying out major structural repairs on her forekeel. The primary source of stress on the boat’s structure comes from the rigging, with the load concentrated at the forward end of the ballast. Over time, this pressure has caused leaks in that area. To address this, we are replacing the old oak forekeel with Purple Heart, a much harder and stronger wood. Additionally, we will be upgrading the inadequate wooden mast step to one fabricated in stainless-steel, which will better distribute the load of the mast and rigging. At 70 years old and having been in use every season since her launch, “Felicity” is due for this repair. The timing is ideal to ensure the boat’s continued longevity and performance for many more seasons to come.
