PROJECT DETAIL
Klang II, renovations, 2009

The 1924 British Channel Yawl, Klang II, was hauled at G&B in late October 2008 for work that is part of a phased renovation. In this phase the boat will receive selected new frames and floor timbers, and some new planking. She will be refastened and recaulked, and may receive some new keel bolts.
In May 2000, the Klang Association was formed to purchase, renovate and operate the Klang II as a community recreation sailboat. After refitting, Klang II sailed from Essex CT to New York City for Operation Sail 2000.
Originally registered in Britain at the historic seafaring port of Falmouth and later in the Channel Islands at Jersey, Klang II took part in the evacuation of Allied troops from the port of St. Malo during World War II. As part of the St. Helier Yacht Club at the time, Klang II was one of 19 boats provided for the evacuation; in recognition, the yacht club was awarded the honor of flying a defaced red ensign, a distinction enjoyed by only 18 yacht clubs around the world. St Helier is the only one which has been awarded the flag as a battle honor.
More information about the 49’ vessel can be found at www.klang2.org
On the railway
Klang was hauled on an overcast day, and a cover put over her cockpit. Another was ordered to cover the rest of the boat during the renovations.
After the bottom was scrubbed, Nat began an inspection and pulled some fastenings. To his surprise he found cast bronze nails.
Disassembling begins
The view on the left--taken from the forward end of the salon looking aft--shows the companionway on the starboard side, a stove backed against the head which is at the foot of the companionway ladder. The dining table stands to the right on a berth about to be removed.
The middle picture--taken from the foot of the ladder--looks forward.
Aft of the companionway is a cabin with berths either side flanking shelves.
.
Three days into disassembling
Three days after the haulout, the head and main salon are stripped down.
Floors being shaped and installed
Once Klang is cleaned out, Bill begins to cut, shape and install the floors to which the planks will be fastened from outside.
As we wind up for Thanksgiving, Bill has two new frames in.
Opening and closing holes
Much of the work doesn't grab a lot of attention but it's critical to the job and often takes a great deal of time. So it is with drilling the holes to take the bolts that go through the frame floors, keel and cast iron ballast keel. It takes a special drill bit to go the necessary 32".
The four holes march down the center of the boat and right now offer miniscule views of the sand below.
Chris Cohen uses epoxy when driving in wooden nails to fill the holes where the old fastenings were removed.
Ready for the cabin sole
Klang even smells good now. Bill has cleaned out the main saloon where all the work was done and applied "bug juice," a mixture of pine tar and linseed oil.
By now Klang has new floors, keel bolts, cabin sole beams and bilge stringers. and Bill is ready to install the cabin sole.
The views of the main saloon are from the companionway forward; the reverse, from the forward bulkhead back to the companionway; and, one of the bilge stringers
The owners go to work
And so, as winter recedes and spring blooms, Klang's owners arrive and set to putting the boat back together. They will re-install the main saloon amenities that were removed in order to get at and fix the leak.
Rip is at work in the main saloon; Mark strikes a graceful pose while caulking, and Willie modifies Klang's zinc, head bent to the task.
Getting there...
The big guns are brought in to scrape and sand the hull, and the ladies live up to their billing.
Wanderson pulls off the tape on launch day.
Launch day
After what seemed like unending rain during the three weeks the owners, friends and family commissioned Klang II, Willie exhibits the pleasure everyone feels to have the hull painted...and only the interior to be put back in place and the brightwork done.
Flags flying, Klang II slips down the ways.
